Ford BlueCruise is an advanced driver assistance feature available on select Ford trucks and SUVs at Schicker Ford in St. Louis. It is part of the Ford Co-Pilot360 Technology suite and offers "hands-free" highway driving capabilities. When activated in proper conditions, Ford BlueCruise allows drivers to drive with their hands off the steering wheel on prequalified sections of divided highways known as Hands-Free Blue Zones. These Blue Zones cover over 130,000 miles of North American roads.

Key Features and Functionalities

  • Hands-Free Driving: Ford BlueCruise enables hands-free driving on certain limited-access highways that have been pre-mapped and validated. The system allows the owner to drive without holding the steering wheel, but it requires the driver to keep their eyes on the road at all times.
  • Driver Monitoring: The feature uses a driver-facing camera to monitor the driver's eye gaze and facial features. This monitoring helps ensure that the driver remains engaged and attentive to the road even when the hands are off the steering wheel.
  • FordPass Connect Modem: To enable Ford BlueCruise, the vehicle's FordPass Connect modem must be authorized through the FordPass App. This allows the feature to access cloud-based services and data.
  • Activation Prompt: The instrument cluster displays an "activation prompt" with a steering wheel icon and text when Ford BlueCruise is available in Hands-Free Blue Zones. This notifies the driver that they can engage the hands-free driving feature.
  • Driver Engagement: While Ford BlueCruise allows hands-free driving, the driver must be prepared to resume control upon the vehicle's request. The driver should always be ready to take back control of the vehicle if necessary.
  • Camera and Sensing System: Ford BlueCruise utilizes a driver-facing camera and a steering torque sensor to monitor the driver and the vehicle's operation. The system also relies on cameras and sensors to detect lane markings for lane centering during hands-free driving.

It's important to note that Ford BlueCruise is designed for specific highway driving conditions and is not intended for use on all roads. The system combines sensing capabilities with embedded maps to determine where Hands-Free Driving is permissible.
